Historical Description

Georges Braque Marine Noir (The Black of the Sea), 1962, a magnificently detailed work, permits the viewer to witness the spectacle of nature, as a majestic sea swells with a glorious wave. The deep indigo tow of the wave pulls our gaze, just as it would attract the oceans contents beneath it. A white spray indicates the crest of the waves and its intense power. Fortunately, the strength of the wave manages not to stir the picturesque rowboat, which sits placidly in the gray water. With a reflection of golden light and a defiant flag at the bow, this work promises to take the viewer's imagination on a daring journey. Braque creates the sky in a stunning mixture of grays - lighter sections hold the promise of sunlight and beautiful days, while the darker gray holds the power of a storm, and with that its own beauty. The dark is chasing out the light, and we get the impression that bad weather is headed our way - ready to stir the ocean.

Created in 1962, this original color lithograph is is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition 400 in pencil in the lower left.
