Historical Description

Our brightly colored clown "king" is depicted here in a brilliant yellow accented with teal blues and bright reds. The abstracted portrait features a pointed crown which rests on our clown's visage at a slightly tilted angle. The whimsical composition is detailed with two spirals at the center in red and yellow which serves as our clown king's nose. His teal, crescent-moon smile is accented with red and yellow stars in opposite colors, serving as his bright, rosy cheeks. It is a fun and light-hearted work reminiscent of Picasso's equally fun and light-hearted demeanor.

Created in 1962, this offset color lithograph is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right, to the left of the signature and date printed in the stone in black, also in the lower right: 'Picasso | 24.1.62' (January 24, 1962). This work is also numbered from the edition of 200 in pencil in the lower left margin.
