Toreros seek to elicit inspiration and art from their work. Their intentions are not to deliberately cause harm the bull, but create an emotional connection with the crowd through the bull. It is a fragile relationship played out for the crowd to witness, and Braque captures it beautifully. Slowly advancing towards the bull, the torero waves his red flag to catch the bull's eye. The bull turns to acknowledge the torero's presence, as the two prepare for combat. The only face visible is the bull's, but the emotions displayed in the body language by both creatures speak to Braque's brilliant understanding of the human condition.
Created in 1950, this work is hand signed by Georges Braque (Argenteuil-sur-Seine, 1882- Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower left margin.
