Historical Description

"The day I stop working, I will die," Chagall often said to his friends at the end of his life. The remarkable Marc Chagall Le Chevalet aux fleurs (Easel with Flowers), 1976, created just a few years before his passing, testifies to his vibrant need to create. His biographer Sidney Alexander writes, "Like a good artisan, he worked every day: making art was as essential as breathing, the systole and disastole of the heart, the flowing of the blood" (An Intimate Biography, 493). By depicting himself in his studio, painting the beautiful woman before him underneath a large bouquet of flowers, Chagall shows himself in his ideal state. Women, whimsical figures floating in the window pane, a view of a green garden beyond - these are recurring images in his work that hold great importance for the artist. This work is special for its depiction of Chagall's raison d'être.

Created in 1976, this original color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin, it is printed on Arches wove paper.
