Historical Description

Simply weigh Patrick Cramer's catalogue of Miró's illustrated books in your hand and the artist's prolific output becomes clear. Dating to a particularly fruitful period near the end of his life, this print bears comparison to his contemporary large-scale paintings and ceramic murals. This artist's status as a master is based in part on his remarkable ability to maintain a consistent voice and personal vision across many mediums in different scales. Illustrating a volume of Jacques Dupin, a close friend and influential critic of his work, allowed Miró to align his own art with yet another form.

The delicate etched lines leading the eye in different directions across the sheet in this work are reminiscent of the stanzas in a poem: all connected but with their own purpose and role. The luminous orbs of color that the artist loves to create with aquatint add another dimension to the composition.

Created in 1974, this original color etching and aquatint is hand-signed by Joan Miró (Barcelona, 1893 - Palma, 1983) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil the lower left margin, this work was printed by Arte Adrian Maeght, Paris on Arches wove paper. A numbered edition of 150 along with several artist's proofs also exist. This work is the second of five etchings that were ultimately not included in the published edition of the book.
