Historical Description

Aptly titled L'Oiseau dans l'atelier (The Bird in the Studio), this captivating piece depicts a spacious artist's studio in which a large, white bird flies at the center of the composition. Conveyed in warm, earthy hues of brown and green, this magnificent print exemplifies Chagall's immense skill at transporting the viewer from the realm of the real to that of the imagined. We almost feel as though we are inside of this luxurious studio with this white bird and the surrounding lovers. Within Chagall's world, fairies and larger-than-life birds are everyday happenstance. With this work, Chagall invites us to enter his world in which everything seems possible.

Created in 1976, this original lithograph is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin (aside from 10 artist's proofs on Japon numbered in Roman numbers).
