| Historical Description: | |
| After beginning his career with conceptual works, Chia turned to a concern with
the figurative, which has marked his art since the 1970's. Created during a
twenty-year stint in New York City, Children's Holiday heralds the monumental
public sculpture now on display in such public collections as the Virginia Museum
of Fine Arts. The artist gives real weight to the three figures in his large-scale
print, building volumes with color and density of line. Arranged in a pyramidal
form, Chia's people connect to each other through their gaze, touch and overlapping
limbs. Form takes a backseat to color in this work inspired by the leisure of
vacation and the lighthearted play of children.
Created in 1984, this work is hand-signed by Sandro Chia (Florence, 1946 - ) at the lower right corner and numbered 51/75 in the lower left. Printed on six panels of Somerset soft white paper, the piece also bears the publisher's ink stamp on the verso in the lower left: "© 1984 CFP CORP." NOTE: This is a very large and wonderful work. Shipping the work within the frame would be particularly expensive due to its significant size. Therefore, the work can been removed from the frame and sent securely at cost. Biography of Sandro Chia
Sandro Chia (1946 - )
Italian painter, born in Florence, where he studied at the Academy. In the early 1970s he experimented with *Conceptual and *Performance art, but he returned to painting in 1975 and by the end of the decade he had adopted the style with which he has become one of the best-known Italian painters of his generation, characteristically featuring muscle-bound figures in 122 pseudo-heroic situations parodying the Old Masters (Courageous Boys at Work, NG of Modem Art, Edinburgh, 1981). Robert *Hughes describes his figures as 'ladylike coal-heavers expelling wind while floating in postures vaguely derived from classical statuary'. Chia has also made sculpture in a similar vein.
