| Historical Description: | |
| This unique piece depicts a checkerboard pattern composed of the colors black,
red, and blue. This pattern is painted in gouache upon tracing paper, adding
a translucent element to this work. Another intriguing component of this work
is the thin white line that traces a large, vertical rectangle within the larger
checkerboard, as though blocking off a specific area. White gouache is also
applied along the bottom, outlining certain red squares within the work (but
not all of them). There appears to be a certain rhyme or reason to the checkerboard
pattern; fairly consistent in shape and size, Delaunay's use of color
relays a sense of rhythm or set repetition.
Created in 1925, this work is a unique gouache on tracing paper. This work is hand-signed twice by Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) in pencil in the lower center and along the right border. It is annotated 'F5787' in pencil in the lower right and 'T.40' along the right border. CITATION: Provenance:
1. A Photo Certificate of Authenticity hand-signed by Jean Louis Delaunay, who has the sole moral right to authenticate works by Sonia Delaunay, accompanies this piece. 2. The authenticity of this piece has been confirmed by Richard Ross. About the Framing: | |

Biography of Sonia Delaunay
Sonia Delaunay (1885 - 1979)
Sonia Delaunay (also known as Sonia Terk) is a Jewish-French artist best known for her use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Along with her husband, artist Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), she became involved with the Orphism Art Movement, a movement that viewed painting as the bringing together of a sensation of bright colors. She worked in a variety of mediums such as painting, textile, design, and stage set design and often integrated furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and cloth into her works.
Sonia Delaunay was born as Sarah Stern on November 14, 1885 in a small Ukrainian town called Gradizhsk. She was separated from both her father and her mother at the age of five when she was adopted by her wealthy, Jewish uncle Henri Terk, a powerful lawyer in St. Petersburg. Henri Terk renamed her Sonia Terk and offered her a life of social prominence and higher education.
At age 16, she was enrolled in one of St. Petersburg's most respected secondary schools, where an art teacher acknowledged her talent. Delaunay was sent to Germany to study further and soon entered the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts where she studied from 1903-1905. After school, she moved to Paris, the center of arts and entertainment, where she quickly took up an active social life. In Paris, Delaunay met Wilhem Uhde, a prominent art dealer and collector. They were married on December 5, 1908 but soon divorced in 1910 when Sonia fell in love with and married Robert Delaunay, a fellow artist. Often living in the shadow of her husband, Delaunay's career took off after his death in 1941. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre, Paris in 1964, and in 1975, she was officially named an officer of the French Legion of Honor.
