Historical Description

No place inspired Chagall more than Nice, and this fruitful partnership of love and admiration is perfectly encapsulated in the magical work before you, Siren with Pine. A magenta siren floats above the beautifully detailed city, wistfully reaching for an enchanting bouquet of flowers. A lone pine stands beside her, as if trying to reach up to where she is so as not to get left behind. A sense of longing and desire fill the page, as the siren refuses to make contact with the viewer and rather appears to delight in her dreamlike world. What is she missing? What does she want? Only the gorgeous rich tones of reds, blues, and greens give way to her secrets.

Created in 1967, this original color lithograph is from Chagall's series Nice and the Côte d'Azur, comprising twelve color lithographs. Numbered from the edition of 75 proofs in Roman numerals in pencil in the lower left margin and printed on Arches wove paper. It is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin.
