| Facing left, eyes partially closed, a weary old woman shrouds herself in clothing.
Through his delicate yet intricate use of line and shadow, Lievens creates a
fascinating sense of texture. The old woman's skin appears leathery and worn,
weighed down by age and exhaustion. As if to shield herself from the world,
this old woman dons herself in heavy clothing, pulling a dark black hood upon
her head. Lievens melds the identity of the subject with that of her attire,
making it difficult for the viewer to discern what this woman in wearing; the
texture of the clothing appears to merge seamlessly with the woman's aged face.
The piece retains an air of mystery, for the viewer cannot help but wonder who
this woman is and what experiences she has drawn from her long life.
