Historical Description:

Contrasting strong diagonal and horizontal lines with the vertical figures in the foreground, Beham (Nuremberg, 1500- Frankfurt, 1550) captures Christ in a moment of torment. Falling to his knees with the weight of the cross, Christ, located centrally in the composition, remains surprisingly serene as he gazes into the faces of his sneering abusers. Beham depicts the moment in which Christ is being attached to the cross and utilizes line and shadow to create a foreboding scene in which Christ appears alone amongst his tormentors, yet nobly and complacently bears the burden of the cross.

Created c. 1521, this original woodcut is monogrammed in the plate in the upper right 'HSB.' This work is a fine, dark impression printed on a fine laid paper. Provenance noted on the back of the piece: G. Stork From Milano 1800/Yu H. 13239/ 'vh 6' (not in Lugt)/ Colnaghi 21573/6.

Biography of Hans Sebald Beham

Barthel Beham was the older brother of painter, Hans Sebald, a prolific printmaker who produced over 2,000 prints during his career. He focused on tiny engravings, placing him in the German printmaking school called the Little Masters. Beham also worked with larger woodcuts and designed playing cards, wallpaper, coats of arms, and patterns for other artists. He illuminated a prayer book and created a painting for Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg. Along with his brother and Georg Pencz, Hans Sebald Beham was banished from Nuremberg in 1525 due to his beliefs that opposed Lutheranism, the dominant religion of the city. After returning to the city, Beham was exiled again for publishing a book that was believed to be plagiarized from one of Albrecht Durer's writings.
