| Description: | |
| Utilizing bright tones of red, blue, green, and yellow, Calder depicts a moment
of communication between man and beast. The lion tamer, kneeling before the
lion, whip in hand, does not appear as the dominant figure in this composition.
Rather, the unthreatening lion, endowed with a human-like face and large ears,
appears as the subject in control. The lion does not strike fear into the heart
of the viewer, but appears as a fanciful friend to mankind. This piece, however,
brings up the question, is the man taming the lion or is the lion taming the
man?
Created c. 1970, this original color lithograph is hand signed by Alexander Calder (1898 - 1976) in pencil in the lower right and numbered 62/75 in pencil in the lower left.
