Description:

Capturing our attention with a dazzling array of light and dark hues, the optical effect of this work engages the viewer and entices our senses. The large scale of this piece draws us in to the image, exhibiting Yvaral's revolutionary use of geometric abstraction.

Created in 1974, this original acrylic on canvas is signed by the artist in black paint in the lower center of the work. Signed additionally on the reverse, the title, Yvaral code number, and date '1974' appear with the signature.

Bold squares in shades of violet and purple create a three dimensional effect to the image, while the arrangement of squares enhances this sense of the volumetric quality of this work. The image appears to travel in within a rectangle, in a spiraled effect with a unique twist. Appearing to extend off the canvas, the optical illusion Yvaral utilizes exemplifies the artist's mastery of skill and technique. Yvaral's work is best known for the gridded effects he creates that break up an image or become the entire image itself as demonstrated with this work, showing us a further dimension in a revolutionary style and technique.

Biography of Jean Pierre Vasarely Yvaral

Combining the poetry of geometry with figurative art, Yvaral has created a wholly original body of artworks that has received the praise of important critics and museum curators around the world.

Born in France, Yvaral grew up in a complete artistic ambiance.  Working alongside his father, Victor Vasarely, he discovered and explored the beauty of geometry in art.  The inspiration of the French Impressionists and Pointillists is evident in Yvaral's vibrant paintings.  The artist juxtaposes pure colors next to one another to achieve the illusion of three-dimensional forms.
