Our History

Masterworks snapshot

In the mid-1970s, Masterworks Fine Art was a sole proprietorship. Our first website was launched in 1993 and by November, 2001 Masterworks Fine Art was founded. This business philosophy allows us to look to collectors' long-term needs, removing the urgency or pressure on our part from any particular transaction. By listening carefully and sharing our knowledge and experience, Masterworks Fine Art strives to enhance the collecting experience for our clients. We seek to aid the informed and intelligent buyer to make equally informed and wise decisions when looking to purchase works of fine art. Masterworks Fine Art is confident that the interested collector will find value and quality in the artwork we offer. To serve collectors at all levels and stages -- from beginners to connoisseurs -- Masterworks Fine Art offers a range of quality works, from low-priced lithographs to million-dollar superlative masterpieces.

Masterworks Fine Art Company Profile

Alex Adelman, Founder
Alex Adelman Collecting art has been a passion of mine since the age of 15 when I acquired my first work of fine art: an original color lithograph by Joan Miró. I began building my knowledge as a teenager by working at an auction house describing auction lots. This opportunity exposed me to a wide range of collectibles and fine art. In college, at Washington University, St. Louis, I worked on three degrees: printmaking, anthropology, and art history. Later, I completed graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. While in college, I continued to buy and sell fine art on a part-time basis.

In the late 80's, a turning point in my life, I made a move from academia to a full-time career in selling fine art. In 1987 I went to work for a corporate art gallery with almost 50 retail locations worldwide; I managed, then directed, the largest gallery for the company. Employed there until 1993, I gained a substantial amount of experience and began formulating ideas about a different way to sell art. I discovered that my values contrasted with the qualities and attributes of commercial galleries in high-rent districts. What was crucial in my mind was recognizing the importance of professionalism, honesty, and relationship-building.

It is with deep sadness that Masterworks Fine Art announces the passing of president and founder Alex Adelman. Alex passed away last year in Maui, Hawaii surrounded by his loving family. He devoted his life to his love of art, and his memory lives on through the company that he worked so hard to build. A knowledgeable art dealer and innovative businessman, Alex sought to offer clients a new way to purchase art -- one based on honesty and relationship building. In loving memory of Alex's generous spirit, fun-loving nature, and passion for art, Masterworks Fine Art will be developing education outreach programs within the next year, as Alex would love nothing more than to share his love of art with those around him.

Ariel Rosen, Curatorial Assistant (ariel@masterworksfineart.com)
It wasn't until I interned at Galerie Maeght in Paris that I saw how my love of art could translate into a career. Further experiences in the Prints and Drawings Departments at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Louvre drew me into the world behind each picture hanging on a wall. Art fascinates me because each piece can be a collision of culture, time period, or manifesto, but the viewer's response is personal; to be meaningful, it doesn’t have to be informed by academic theory or historical background.

Sheryl McMahan, Curatorial Registrar (sheryl@masterworksfineart.com)
As I am finishing the Museum Studies Program at John F. Kennedy University I find I am very excited about all of the potential opportunities that abound in the art world. I have over 6 years of sales experience and although I come from a background in Anthropology, I find I am managing to navigate my way through this new world rather successfully. The only downside is that being exposed to such wonderful pieces has oftentimes made me wish I had a much larger bank account to accommodate my love and admiration for some of our featured works.

Ashley Hayes, Director of Outreach and Education (ashley@masterworksfineart.com)
As a graduate of the University of California Berkeley with a major in Art History and a minor in Education, I am thrilled to assist Masterworks Fine Art as they branch out from the commercial art world into the field of art education. I feel that giving back to the community and fostering a passion for the visual arts is of the utmost importance. My love of art stems from the power that it holds to transform an individual. Whether it is a passing image that relays a certain sentiment, a great masterpiece in a museum with historical or stylistic value, or a work hanging on your wall that brings a smile to your face, every day art enriches the lives of us all.

Andy Yu, Master Framer of Image Design and Framing (framing@masterworksfineart.com)
The frame may be made of metal or wood or it may be purely conceptual, but it is a perimeter that defines where the art ends and the rest of the world begins. Our personal framer, Andy Yu, is a master framer who has worked with many noted artists and businesses for the past 15 years. He has framed every single one of our pieces for the past five years and we always return because they always turn out flawless.
